The limestone island of Öland lies just off the coast of south-eastern Sweden. The island’s rugged, rural flavour is quite unique. Öland has a rich blend of natural, cultural and historical attractions: its Great Alvar Plain, divided by immaculately fashioned dry stone walls; the ancient coastal hay meadows and pasturelands; the unusual linear villages, fashioned in the Middle Ages; the many ancient Iron Age, Stone Age and medieval remains, and an exceptional flora and rich birdlife have all earned southern Öland World Heritage status.
Öland’s 160 km long island offer lots of unique habitats and beautiful landscapes. Here you will find small reserves from the Ottenby Wood, the largest deciduous woodland in Southern Öland, Alvar Plain, small wetlands, lakes and beautiful rocky coastal areas.
The island is particularly well known for its birdlife. - The best time is from May to October.
May - June
By early May to early June Öland hosts migrating warblers, flycatchers, redstarts, Bluethroat, geese, and waders on their way to the Northern breeding grounds. Among the 100 breeding species are Montagu’s Harrier, Crane, Corncrake, Black-tailed Godwit, Nightjar, Collared Flycatcher, Thrush Nightingale, Icterine Warbler, Barred Warbler, Common Rosefinch, and Golden Oriole.
Late May and early June is the best time for rarities from South-east and Eastern Europe, such species as Red-footed Falcon, Marsh Sandpiper, Red-rumped Swallow, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Greenish Warbler and Bee-eater being amongst the more regular of the unusual visitors at this time.
July - August
In July and early August the waders arrive from their arctic breeding grounds, among the thousands waders you find Red-necked Phalarope and Broad-billed Sandpiper. In the air you may keep an eye to rare raptors like Pallied Harrier, Steppe Eagle and Lesser Spotted Eagle who is regular visitors.
October
In October it’s time for the Siberian rarities and Ottenby is the best place in Sweden to find Pallas’s Warbler, Inornate Warble, Radde’ Warbler, Hume’s Warbler, Dusky Warbler. Looms Mergansers, eiders, scoters, cranes and thousands of geese can be seen moving along the coast. Among the thousands of Barnacle Geese you may be lucky to find a Red-breasted.
