Falsterbo is one of the most famous autumn migration watch-points in Europe. Southern and Western winds are the best for raptors such as Honey Buzzard, Common Buzzard, Red Kite, Osprey and by far the most common raptor, Sparrowhawk (counts can exceed 2,000 birds).
Falsterbo have 3 main watch points,
The south-western point ‘Nabben’ is a large sand dune complex with rough grass and bushes surrounding a golf course. There are tidal pools on the edges of the dunes that are good for wildfowl and waders passing between Sweden and Denmark. This area is a magnet for small birds as it is the last major cover before they leave Sweden. Thousands of passerines can been seen on a day count.
The lighthouse nearby can produce lot of passerines, here extensive ringing is mainly carried out, which is out of bounds to visitors.
The heathlands of Falsterbo `Ljungen’ is the best to watch raptors. Raptors soar and gain height to cross the sea to Denmark. On a good days thousands of raptors of almost all European species can be seen.
If the migration fail, the Scanian Lake area is only 30 minute drive away. There is always eagles and kites to watch.
Every season you will see some rarities at Fal-sterbo. It could be Black Stork, Lesser and Greater Spotted Eagle, Steppe Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, Pallid Harrier, Long-tailed Skua, Richards Pipit, Yellow-browed Warbler, Two-barred Crossbill etc. Some year you have invasion species like, tits, woodpeckers, Nutcracker etc.
