Scania (Skaane) is the Southern most county of Sweden and one of the best places to go birding in the entire country. Scania has a lot of birds and beautiful nature to offer all year around. Many Swedes and Danes visit this famous area on day trips.
In central Scania you find several lakes, forests, forming beautiful landscapes. Lake Börringe, Lake Kranke, Lake Vomb, Lake Sövde, and the 8 kilo-metres long Fyledalen are the best areas to go birding.
Eastern Scania is very beautiful and you will find many interesting birds not seen elsewhere in Scania.
Scania holds a population of more than 1,200 pa-irs of Red Kites, 10 pairs of Golden Eagles, 8 pairs of White-tailed Eagles, and good numbers of Black Woodpeckers, Thrush Nightingales, Icterine Warbler etc.
The species you can see vary from season to season. In spring and autumn you can see up to 100 species in one day!
Winter: Golden Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Red Kite, Rough-legged Buzzard, Bean and White-fronted Goose, Goosander, and Smew. Occasi-onally, a rare owl or eagle is wintering in Scania.
Spring: Great Bittern, Barnacle Goose, Eagles, Red Kite, Hobby, Black Tern, Waders, Black and Green Woodpecker, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Wryneck, Golden Oriole, Thrush Nightingale, Bearded Reedling, Penduline Tit, Marsh Warbler, Icterine Warbler, Grasshopper Warbler, and many more.
Summer: Much like the species you can see in late spring.
Autumn: Ducks, Barnacle Goose, Honey Buzzard, Harries (4 species), Eagles, Peregrine, Hobby, and lots of waders including Broad-billed Sandpiper and Red-necked Phalarope, Black Woodpecker,
You can find several che-ap and direct flights from all European countries. From the States, SAS and Delta operate direct flights from New York, Atlanta, Washington, and Chicago.
